Getting holiday cards from family and friends is one of the best parts of the season! But for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD), writing out those greetings and addresses can be tricky because of small, cramped handwriting (micrographia) and hand tremors.

Don't let that stop you from spreading holiday cheer! Try these tips to make writing easier and more readable:

Set Yourself Up for Success

Time it Right – Write during your “on” times when your medication is working best.

Sit Smart – Use a chair with good back support and keep your feet flat on the floor.

Use the Right Table – A table at a comfy height can support your elbows and arms.

Light it Up – Make sure you have bright lighting to see clearly.

Make Writing Easier

Go Big! – Choose larger cards with plenty of space to write. Stick to the left side where there’s more room.

Grip it Good – Try a pen with a thick or built-up grip. A weighted pen may help with tremors.

Smooth Moves – Use gel ink pens for an easier flow. (Lefties, watch out for smudging!)

Draw the Line – Use a ruler and pencil to make guide lines. Block letters (instead of cursive) can be easier to read.

Warm Up & Practice

💪 Get Moving – Do “air writing” by tracing big letters in the air before you start.

💪 Finger Flicks – Loosen up by flicking your fingers a few times.

💪 Practice First – Use printable handwriting sheets to trace and copy before writing on your card.

Take Your Time

One Word at a Time – Don’t rush! Pause between words to reset your writing.

Take Breaks – If your writing gets smaller or shaky, stop and do a quick hand stretch.

Skip the Writing – If handwriting is too hard, type a short letter to include or send a photo card instead!

The Most Important Tip

Your handwriting doesn’t have to be perfect—just readable! What matters most is sharing holiday joy with the people you love.

Happy Writing & Happy Holidays! 🎄✉✨
