Loud for Life Therapy: Get Loud and Stay Loud

Updated: May 9, 2023

Loud for Life group

What is Loud for Life?

Loud for life is a weekly group exercise class designed to help people with PD maintain and/or strengthen their voice.  We do this through the completion of LSVT voice exercises and fun group activities/discussion.

Who can participate in this group?

This exercise group was designed for people who have previously completed the full LSVT LOUD program with a certified SLP.  However, you may still benefit from this group if you have not completed LSVT in the past, just reach out in advance to discuss your options.

What is LSVT?

LSVT stands for Lee Silverman Voice treatment.  This is an intensive treatment program that uses the principles of neuroplasticity to specifically target and improve the changes in speech/voice typically seen in people with PD.  This therapy focuses solely on increasing vocal loudness to a normal level, and recalibrating you so that you feel comfortable using this new “loud” voice. Research indicates that there is a spreading of effects across the speech system in response to LSVT, even though the primary goal is to increase volume and effort.  For example, LSVT can help improve respiratory support, articulation, intonation, and even facial expression. This therapy has been shown to be most effective when sessions are provided 4 days a week, for 4 consecutive weeks. If you have noticed changes in your speech/voice, I highly encourage you to consider this treatment option.

What is the goal of Loud for Life?

The goal of this group exercise class is to help you stay on track and maintain your “loud” voice.  Research shows that the positive treatment effects from LSVT can last up to two years. However, this is mostly in people who continue to do their LSVT exercises regularly, as recommended. But, we all know how hard it is to maintain a consistent exercise routine.  This group is here to help! In addition, the ultimate goal of therapy is to make sure people can hear and understand you in conversation, so the best way to practice that is in a group setting. If you have not previously completed LSVT, it doesn’t mean you should not exercise. You too may need to strengthen your voice and/or exercise to hopefully prevent a decline in the future. So, you will likely also benefit from this group exercise class.  However, we want to make sure you are doing the exercises properly, which is why it would be important to reach out in advance.

Can’t I just exercise on my own?

Yes, of course! In fact, daily exercise is strongly recommended.  However, isn’t it more fun with friends? In addition, we know that PD can negatively affect your sensory system, which means you may not hear your voice the same way others do.  When people with PD use a normal voice, they frequently feel as though they are shouting. In this group, you will get support but also honest feedback from your peers (and not just a naggy SLP or family member).  This will overall help improve your calibration and comfort using your normal “loud” voice.

I hope you will join us, but please reach out if you have any questions or concerns!  If you have any questions, email me at kaila@brainbodybetter.com. Also, please refer to the LSVT website for further information regarding their programs. https://www.lsvtglobal.com/LSVTLoud
